One of the most relevant activities for World Diabetes Day will take place this Sunday, November 13, from 08:30 hours, on the Costanera.There will be talks, patient testimonies, a massive walk and zumba classes.
This day is organized by the Paraguayan Society of Diabetology (SDP) and the National Diabetes Program, with the support of the French laboratory, Sanofi Pasteur.In fact, the protocol ceremony will take place at 8:30 am in the coastal park of the López Palace.
From a central platform, Dr. Luis Barriocanal, head of the Paraguayan Society of Diabetology, will welcome.Dr. Gilda Benítez, director of the National Diabetes Program will follow her.
Then a talk about diabetic retinopathy1 will begin, one of the main causes of blindness for diabetes.It will be provided by the ophthalmologist, Dr. Sara Pozzi.This pathology occurs when diabetes damages small blood vessels in the retina.
Dr. Sussam Benítez, secretary of the SDP, added that after the talk "some patients will provide their life experiences."Then, he announced, they will start the walk.It will be 2 km, with free registration, with the categories: from 10 to 19 years, 20 to 35, 36 to 50, and 51 to 75 years or more.
At the end, there will be zumba and physical activity.Everyone will receive shirts alluding to the diabetes prevention message and participate in raffles and awards.

According to estimates, 422 million adults worldwide had diabetes in 2014, compared to the 108 million in 1980. The worldwide prevalence of diabetes has almost doubled since that year, since it has gone from 4.7% to 8, 8,5% in the adult population2.
Dr. Daisy Arguello, of the Directorate of Preventive Medicine and IPS Health Program, explained that the country's country prevalence is 9.7% in the adult population3;with greater prevalence in over 64 years (22.5%).
The activity on the Costanera has the support of the French laboratory Sanofi Pasteur.This, as part of its corporate social action, undertakes to disseminate useful information to raise awareness about prevention, treatment and complications due to lack of timely care of diabetes.
