From early hours, in the premises of the Ministry of Public Health (Silvio Pettirossi and Brazil), several specialists provide free controls for people with diabetes or interested in knowing whether or not they suffer from the disease.They perform weight checks, pressure and blood sugar level.In addition, they seek to raise awareness about how important a good treatment is to avoid complications, according to the journalist Gabriela González Escalada.
22% of the major adult population in Paraguay already has a confirmed diagnosis of diabetes, while 9.7% of all citizens suffer from the disease, according to data provided by Dr. Gilda Benítez, director of the National Diabetes Program."In addition, we believe that about 4% of the residents do not know their diagnosis but already suffers from the well -known silent disease," he said.
“Early detection, along with a good later treatment, is very important.Annual controls should be performed to the ophthalmologist to avoid the ratinopathy that can lead to blindness, for example, ”said Dr. Benítez.The complications of this condition are divided into acute and serious.
The first is known as the diabetic coma, with which the patient is serious and decompensated, no matter how much lounged.While chronic complications occur when high levels of sugar in the body affect eyes, blood circulation, some organ or nerve endings, which can even end the amputation of the foot, according to Dr. Benítez.
It also urged to maintain a healthy life, with a good diet based on fruits and vegetables, a lot of liquid and physical exercises according to the age and weight of each one.Finally, the doctor urged all citizens to perform the respective controls, especially those who have risk factors, those who have family history with diabetes, overweight, obesity or are smoker."They must approach the care centers, checks are free and fast," he said.
World Diabetes Day
Each of November, World Diabetes Day is commemorated, within the framework of the most important awareness campaign that takes place in more than 140 countries.It was established by WHO in 1991, in response to the alarming increase in cases in the world.In 2007, the United Nations first celebrated this day, after the approval of an official resolution, in December 2006.
The awareness campaign aims that people with diabetes, health personnel, institutions and society in general understand the scope, characteristics and possible consequences of the disease.
