Diabetic retinopathy is one of the main causes of blindness, so adequate diabetes control reduces the risk of damage, said Araceli Robles, a doctor attached to the ophthalmology service of the General Hospital of Mexico.
Within the framework of World Vision Day commemorated on October 13, he explained that the main causes of blindness are: diabetic retinopathy, as a consequence of diabetes;Hereditary glaucoma without manifestations and cataracts that have not been operated or treated.The last ones are considered a transitory cause.
The specialist said that diabetic retinopathy and cataracts can be prevented, as long as people with diabetes are properly attended.
While glaucoma is not preventable, but it is controlled in case of being detected in time.Being a hereditary disease, it is necessary to monitor relatives after 20 years of age.
Araceli Robles highlighted the importance of prevention campaigns that are carried out in the country and in which the practice of exercise is promoted, to go to the doctor and lose weight, so that the patient has a better control and the complications appearLate or not appear.
He considered that through prevention campaigns, Mexico can achieve the objective proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to avoid blindness cases by 2020.
