Diabetics and their relatives are taught to assume the disease, understand their nature and are advised to take responsibility for daily control.
This didactic work also serves to recycle primary care nurses
With the aim of guiding and helping patients with diabetes in the knowledge and control of the disease, the diabetological education consultation of the Integrated Area of Villarrobledo will fulfill the ten years since it opened its doors, coinciding with the anniversaryof the inauguration of the General Hospital of this town of Albacete.
In the Endocrinology Service, Dr. Rosa Pilar Quílez, the Dietitian-Nutritionist Mar Navarro and the nurse Mercedes Cuevas work, which also performs educator functions. This consultation currently attends 650 diabetic patients, who are advised to assume the responsibility of performing daily control of their illness. For which "it is key- as Mercedes Cuevas points out- that understand diabetes and know how to treat it."
"The diabetological education consultation has the main mission of teaching the patient through a planned and progressive program to assume the disease and understand its chronic nature," explains Cuevas.
This didactic work is not limited only to patients and family, also forms and recycled primary care nurses interested in catching up on the latest news in the matter, since they are in short the referent of the diabetic and those who recommend careand monitor the patient in a scheduled way.
It should be borne that therapeutic education in diabetes is an interdisciplinary process that is carried out by different professionals and must include a combination of knowledge, clinical care, nutritional therapy, pedagogical methods, learning strategies for learning modifications of behavior or behavior to improve theself -control.
And it is that the care of people with diabetes requires the availability of an interactive team in which the health personnel of hospital, primary, pediatrics and other multidisciplinary teams participate jointly.
Cuevas insists on the importance that the information to be transmitted is adapted to the individual needs of the patient and their relatives."You have to take into account aspects such as age, type of diabetes or cultural influences," he adds.
Control the risk factors, management of complicated situations, involve the patient in their own care and promote healthy lifestyle habits are some of the priority objectives that have both in the diabetological education consultation of the General Hospital of Villarrobledo and in the consultations ofNursing of each health center. What is, in short, it is to favor the independence and freedom of the diabetic.
"The basic tips are mainly in issues of self -control, food, complications prevention and physical exercise, apart from teaching in the devices used for administration of both insulin and any other medication that has to be administered to be injected," he said.
In that sense, Cuevas remembers that clinical sessions are periodically held at the Villarrobledo General Hospital on the treatment of diabetes. The next one will be taught in October and not only will they attend health professionals, but also all those who want to expand their knowledge about the control of this disease.
