The diabetological nursing consultation of the Department of Salut de la Plana, directed by nurse María Teresa Marí, takes advantage of the school vacations of pediatric patients to perform workshops and practical courses that help children with diabetes improve the control of their pathology.
In this way, various workshops and talks about nutrition, food and insulinotherapy have been organized during the summer and the rest of non -school periods.
"Our goal is to work the autonomy of children with diabetes to achieve control of their illness and teach them that they can carry out a life very similar to normal life," says María Teresa Marí.
"Some children stay during the year without being able to go on an excursion with their peers because they still do not dominate the insulin injection technique," adds the expert nurse, "so from the consultation they are being cited in small groups to instruct themin insulinotherapy workshops. ”
The Diabetes Unit, composed of a pediatrician specializing in endocrinology and an expert nurse, serves 70 small patients.
Thanks to these workshops and these practical classes, children with diabetes learn to live their disease more normally, improve control of their diabetes and manage to increase their autonomy.
At the moment, the Plana Department of Health, serves more than 70 pediatric patients in its diabetes unit, which is composed of a pediatrician specializing in endocrinology and an expert nurse in diabetological education.Therapeutic education is carried out both aimed at children and close parents and relatives.
In addition, the University University Hospital was the first Castellón Center authorized for the implementation of pediatric insulin pumps, at the end of 2014. Insulin pumps are small portable devices that manage insulin during 24 hours a day through acatheter and a cannula implanted under the skin.Even so, this therapy is not indicated for all children with diabetes.
