On the occasion of the arrival of summer, numerous patient associations will organize camps for children with diabetes with the aim of providing them with diabetological education and tools to facilitate their independence regarding the management of the disease beyond the safety of the family home.

Some summer camps that also offer children the opportunity to have fun and enjoy a few days of leisure, as well as to live and share experiences with other minors with diabetes.

As Andoni Lorenzo Garmendia, president of the Spanish Diabetes Federation (Fede), a member of Somos Patients, “these camps are an excellent alternative to help minors to acquire responsibilities regarding their diabetes, but are also positive for parents, who will verify firsthand that their children earn in confidence and self -self. ”

Summer camps are adapted to the needs of minors with ages between 7 and 16 years and develop in an environment adapted to teaching in which learning on diabetes is facilitated and promoted, among other necessary issuesFor those affected, the practice of physical exercise and adequate and healthy food.

And to this it is combined, as the Fede highlights, “the importance that is given to the fact that minors know themselves better and mature, and assimilate those fundamental issues that can benefit them in their day to day, as is good controlof his blood glucose. And all surrounded by health professionals. ”

More;Summer camps are not only beneficial for minors, but also for their parents, because in addition to the necessary family respite they can verify that their children can reach some autonomy and self -responsibility of their diabetes outside their usual environment.

For all these reasons, the Fede recommends “parents who take this summer alternative and analyze the possibility of registering their children in one of them, especially from 7-8 years.Precisely many of the entities and associations that are part of our Federation and, therefore, of practically all autonomous communities, organize this type of camps every year ”.
