The prevalence of diabetes could increase to 12.9 percent and, with it, Mexico would occupy the seventh place worldwide in 2030, warned the member of the Mexican Society of Nutrition and Endocrinology, Óscar Moreno Loza.
He added that this projection, according to the International Diabetes Federation, provides more than 11 million cases with that disease for the next 14 years.
These figures, he said at a press conference, would be higher than those of 2010, when the Federation placed Mexico in the tenth place with 6.8 million people with diabetes and a prevalence of 10.8 percent.
“The panorama is nothing good and measures must be taken;Obviously it is a matter of communication and education at the population level. This requires timely and assertive intervention by doctors, ”he said.
During his participation in the Seminar “The new diabetes panorama in Mexico, Moreno Loza explained that diabetes refers to a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia, as a result of defects in the secretion and/or action of insulin, hormone thatRegulates the blood sugar level.
The specialist said that hyperglycemia, high blood sugar levels, is associated in the long term with damage, dysfunction and failure of different organs.
As a consequence, he said, the most frequent cause of death among people with type 2 diabetes are cardiovascular diseases, because high blood sugar levels affect heart and blood vessels.
In addition, he said, it causes fatal complications such as coronary and cerebral arterial diseases that lead to heart attack and stroke, respectively.
He said that the bad control of this condition can also lead to blindness, renal failure, amputations as a result of infections and erectile dysfunction in men, for example.
Given this, the medical director associated with the metabolic area in MSD Mexico, Víctor Rincón Ponce, highlighted the importance of having a good control of the condition and, for this, he urged those who live with diabetes to have a good adherence to the medication, change their styleof life and go regularly with doctors.
For example, he added, it is important to have an ophthalmic review, feet to rule out injuries and measure renal function, blood pressure, lipids."This is the minimum medical service that a patient should receive to be able to detect in a timely manner and prevent damage," he said.
In relation to treatment, Rincón Ponce stressed that those who suffer from this condition should avoid hypoglycemia, low blood sugar levels, which depends on the prescribed medication.
For people with diabetes, he exemplified, that problem represents the risk of generating an acute crisis of a heart attack.
He insisted that prevention is linked to a change in lifestyle, a healthy diet and constant physical activity, all supervised by health specialists.
On April 7, World Health Day was focused on diabetes to intensify prevention, improve care and strengthen surveillance, as this disease was a direct cause of 1.5 million deaths in 2012 and, of these cases, almost80 percent was registered in low and medium -sized income countries.
Worldwide, Moreno Loza added, one in 12 people has diabetes, one in two ignores their condition and every seven seconds a person dies for this disease in the world.
