Cases of diabetes in Lima increased from 4% to 8% in the last 10 years and this has made it the city that houses the largest number of people over 25 years affected by this chronic disease, said Helard Manrique, president ofThe Peruvian Society of Endocrinology.
“The increase in cases is mainly due to greater consumption of carbohydrates, sugary products, foods rich in saturated fat and the lack of daily physical activity which has led the population to have problems of overweight or obesity, and, therefore, to develop type 2 diabetes because excess weight, a risk factor closely associated with evil, ”he said.
In addition to overweight and obesity there are other risk factors that can lead to diabetes and these are: arterial hypertension and cholesterol problems.
