During the celebration of the “II Diabetes Day, a commitment of all” in the Assembly of Extremadura, the results of the first survey that has been conducted in the region on food and life habits, social reality of diabetes have been presented, and diabetes training and treatment.
The study, which offers novel and revealing data about patients, shows as the main conclusion the need for health authorities to invest resources in order to obtain greater psychological support to face the pathology, especially for people with type 1, as well asGroup therapies in the health center, for type 2.
The psychological support most demanded by people with diabetes focuses on receiving instructions to prevent future problems related to diabetes, as well as more information on change in food habits.
Among the needs that have arisen to the interviewees due to being treated with insulin, it stands out above all more information to adjust the insulin dose in the case of people with type I diabetes, and better explanations to understand what effects andBenefits has insulin, in the case of type 2 people.
When analyzing hypoglycemia, it should be noted that three out of four interviewed with type 1 diabetes reduce their insulin doses due to the fear of hypoglycemia, and considering that they are well informed about them, 88% consider thatIt knows how to identify them.Psychological support in this case would also be key.
Faced with this, less than half of the type 2 people reduce their insulin dose, a fact marked by the lack of information about hypoglycemia, which causes only 56.6% to identify them.
The majority of the interviewees, and especially the type 1 patient, consider that hypoglycemia condition the proper control of diabetes.
The main reason for not using insulin at the indicated hours is because of the fear of hypoglycemia in the case of type 1 diabetes, while type 2 interviewees indicate by oblivion mainly.Oblivion and fear well need that psychological support.
It is necessary, both for people with type I diabetes and type II, that Spanish society is much more informed about diabetes.Among the channels that they use to be informed, both doctors, nurses, and endocrine and associations of people with diabetes such as the main media they use to inform themselves about the advances and new technologies related to diabetes stand out.
The knowledge of diabetic associations is very high among Extremadura interviewees, since most not only know any association but also belongs to any of them.
The survey, organized by Fadex in collaboration with Sanofi, has been developed throughout the months of December to February 2016, with a participation of more than 200 people with diabetes. The survey has been anonymous and has been analyzed by the market studies “analysis and research”.
