The Albacete Diabetes Association (ADA) organizes this year the II Summer Camp for Boys and Girls with Diabetes. It will be carried out at the facilities located in VES houses - La Fuente Tourist Complex. This year, like the past, we have the Ambientnet company, which performs this type of performances throughout the year.
The camp will attend 40 children between 6 and 16 years old.It will have the collaboration of two doctors and seven nurses, who voluntarily offer to take care of children 24 hours a day.
This type of camps is organized with the intention that children suffering from this disease can do the activities that other children of their age do.
The problem is that these children cannot go to any camp, since they need the surveillance of health personnel so that they do not suffer episodes of hypos and hyperglycemia and if these appear to be controlled.
This type of activity makes both children and adolescents learn to control their illness and exchange experiences with other children who are in similar circumstances.
They also achieve greater self -esteem and autonomy that helps them assume and accept their illness. They should know that they are not unique people in this situation and that in spite of everything they can lead a life practically equal to the rest.
Health personnel will help them become more autonomous with their illness, to solve conflicting situations produced by diabetes (hypoglycemia, ketonurias, etc.).
Every day, apart from performing physical and recreational activities, a practical workshop on diabetes will be taught, which will help to understand their disease and control it, in order to delay or avoid the appearance of metabolic complications.
For the little ones, they also help them learn to do their hair glycemia tests (blood glycemia tests) and to prick the insulin properly. In the event that the child carries an insulin bomb, he favors that they learn their handling. They achieve autonomy and not depend on their parents continuously throughout the day.
As last year, there is the collaboration of the Endocrinology Service of the University Hospital of Albacete, which provides us with an endocrine doctor to be able to carry out the camp.
