Contact lenses for diabetics: They change color to variations in glucose levels

Unfortunately, diabetes is a fairly widespread disease, complicated, dangerous and that today has no cure.In a very simple way a diabetic is one that either produces little or nothing insulin, or its cells do not respond to it, being the result in any of the cases high blood glucose concentrations which can cause truly serious problems (collapseblood vessels, kidneys, nerves etc).

Due to this, diabetes patients have to constantly measure their blood sugar levels (in some cases up to 7 or 8 daily measurements) so as notProblem: They require a blood sample that is obtained after small puncture. That is a gain, to put it very fine.Nobody likes to be clicking all the holy day (and if the patient has to inject herself also insulin imagine the ordeal).

Well, now thanks to an engineer in biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario, Jin Zhang, may soon improve the quality of life of diabetes patients by eliminating the punctures of their lives.

As?Thanks to a new technology developed by Zhang that allows to monitor the glucose levels of any person through the use of contact lenses. These lenses have nanoparticles that react to contact with glucose molecules present in the tears changing color. There is therefore a visual alert that warns about the fall or rise in sugar levels.

The advance seems simply great and also the thing is not here. This technology, with research and variations, could be applied to many other fields and not only to biomedical devices. At the moment they have already given Jin Zhagn Financing to continue working on their research, which is another great news since surely we will see more equally interesting results that these lenses that change color when they come into contact with sugar molecules
